Sass da Grüm sits above Lake Maggiore, reached by a path through forest that leaves the everyday world a little further behind with every step. It has always been more than a hotel, a house in the mountains where guests, retreats and gatherings share the same rhythm of good food, open air and unhurried days.
What you find here isn’t dictated by a checklist of amenities. It’s shaped by the forest around us, the meals we share, and the people who come to teach, to rest, to move, or simply to be somewhere quiet for a while. We look after the place, and the place looks after everyone who stays.

Cared for by the Baumann family
Sass da Grüm has a story that began long before the Baumann family became its custodians.
For Carolina, this place was never unfamiliar. She had already spent many years here as a teacher, experiencing first-hand the quiet of the forest, the rhythm of life on the mountain and the special atmosphere that has always made Sass da Grüm feel different.
Over time, her connection to the place grew into a wish to protect what made it so special, not to change its essence, but to give it the care and attention it deserved. Her husband and her two sons, Michele and Nicolas, supported that vision and together the Baumann family took on the responsibility of carrying Sass da Grüm forward.
Their intention is simple: to preserve the soul of the place while thoughtfully enhancing the guest experience. Respecting its history, nature and character, while bringing greater care to the details that shape a stay, a warm welcome, attentive service, carefully prepared food, considered spaces and feedback that is genuinely heard.

Rooted in nature
Reaching Sass da Grüm is already part of the stay. Guests leave the car below and continue on foot, through forest, while their luggage follows separately. There’s no way to rush this last stretch, and that’s rather the point. By the time you arrive, you’ve already slowed down.
Food, movement and moments together
Sass da Grüm is home to hotel guests and to retreats, workshops, movement practices, music and private celebrations, often at the same table. Meals are vegetarian and largely organic, cooked simply and shared generously. Some weeks bring Qi Gong at sunrise or an evening of live music; others, nothing more than a long lunch on the terrace. The rhythm changes. The care behind it doesn’t.

For Claudia, hospitality is not simply about operations, it is about listening, noticing and creating an atmosphere where people can feel at home.
